South China King of the Hills
Objective: To Create an International Standard Yearly Racing Event at MaoErShan
Background Information:
The King of the Hills Mountain Marathon Series belongs to Seyon Asia Limited and has
been run continually since 1998. Besides 5 yearly races in Hong Kong, King of the Hills
Races have also been held in Taiwan and the Himalayas of India.
King of the Hills is recognized as the standard bearer for off road racing series in Asia.
In a recent runners poll, it was voted the second best organized off road race in Hong
Kong, behind only the enormous budget Oxfam Trailwalker. King of the Hills manages
to hold this position despite the lowest race entry fees in Hong Kong.
Because of the competitively friendly atmosphere and value for money philosophy, King
of the Hills races have gained in popularity each year. In 1998, average participation was
approximately 80 people per race, while by 2006, the average number of registrants for
each race had exceeded 300.
Expanding the King of the Hills Series – A Hot New Concept for South China
At the same time as trail running races have become more popular in Asia, mountain
biking races and duathlons have also increased in popularity. The South China King of
the Hills race would be the first King of the Hills race to add mountain biking in a 2-day
format, though participants would also be able to choose to compete in only running or
biking if they so chose.
The race would take place at Mao Er Shan in Guangxi Province. At 2,141 meters, Mao
Er Shan is the highest point in South China making the course worthy of the King of the
Hills moniker.
