| Dogs and cats with fractures that require internal fixation by stainless steel implants can be given full surgical treatment & hospitalisation. Follow up x-rays of the fracture at 4-6 weeks after surgery is needed and when healing is complete, the implants are removed in a second, simpler surgery. Pets should be kept indoors and some need cage rest until the bone healing is adequate for leash walking. |
............. EYE SURGERY |
Corneal injuries that require a conjunctival graft can be done using our operating microscope. Cataracts can be assessed by Electroretinography and an Extracapsular Lens Extraction or phaco-emulsification performed to restore vision. Attention to giving eyedrop medication and subsequent revisits following surgery are essential. The wearing of a restraint collar will prevent the pet pulling at the sutures to ensure proper wound healing. Vision can usually be salvaged when the pet is brought for early assessment rather than left too late.

Just like people dogs (and less often cats) can get cataracts. This is when the lens becomes cloudy/milky making the eye look white. When the eye becomes cloudy/milky the dog cannot see through it. Our first step is to check with an electro-retinogram to make sure that once the cataract lens is removed your dog will be able to see. In the past the lens was removed intact through a large incision into the eye. We now use a phaco-emulsification unit to break the lens up before ****ing it up like through a vacuum cleaner. All this is done through two incisions at the corner of the eye which only need to be 3mm long. This has the advantage of less swelling and inflammation in the eye. |
