Behavior & Training

How can you train your dog, have fun, and build a lasting relationship at the same time?

No time like the present for training (or re-training) a puppy or adult dog to fit into the human world!  The SPCA offers training programmes to PREVENT problems (Puppy Socialisation Training) and to BEHAVE (Basic Obedience Training).  The SPCA's methods are fun and easy to apply for all family members.

Training can be positive and fun

Walk away from punishment-based training methods and learn how you can reward your dog to obtain and reinforce the behaviours you could only dream about achieving.  Positive reinforcement is a revolutionary new way of understanding the relationship between humans and the domestic dog.  By understanding what makes your dog tick and using the proven techniques, you will learn how to socialise and train your dog to be a well-mannered companion.  The better you understand your dog, the better your relationship will be.

The importance of training your dog to be obedient

Obedience training is basically an education in good manners.  Our group classes are excellent for teaching you training skills so that you can teach your canine companion to respond to cues such as sit, down, stand, stay, come and loose leash walking, as well as for troubleshooting issues such as poor manners, jumping up and pulling on leash.  Put an end to all kinds of undesirable behaviour without yelling, threats, force, punishment or guilt trips.

What Courses are there?

PUPPY SOCIALIZATION COURSE

This is a great opportunity for you and your canine youngster (under 4.5 months old before the beginning of class) to join others and have a terrific playtime.  During each session you will practice puppy obedience, handling, adjusting to new situations, puppy biting, manners, behaviour management and, best of all?play time !  So make a date with your pup and join the rest of the hip crowd at SPCA.

LARGE DOG BASIC OBEDIENCE COURSE

This is a fun, reward-oriented beginner level obedience course designed for socialised adolescent and adult dogs over 15kg.  The course covers sit, down, stay, come, loose-leash walking, introduction to heeling and not jumping up.

SMALL DOG BASIC OBEDIENCE COURSE

Basic training with a tiny twist !  A beginner level obedience course designed for dogs under 15kg.  The course covers sit, down, stay, come, loose-leash walking, introduction to heeling and not jumping up with a small dog focus in mind.

INTERMEDIATE OBEDIENCE "CLICKER" COURSE
