Three local Indonesian partner organisations are supporting Oxfam's response through providing human resources for distributions of materials, support with mapping needs assessments, and sending water and sanitation expertise. Among NGOs currently working in the affected area, Oxfam has been appointed the lead agency on emergency shelter and non-food items under the coordination structure.
There has been torrential rain throughout the last 24 hours which not only poses challenges for aid distribution but very serious health threats for up to 200,000 homeless people. Hospitals are overwhelmed, some with as many as 5,000 people camped around them including many patients having to be treated outside. Oxfam has provided one electricity generator for Bantul Muhamidyah Hospital.
In a couple of days, Oxfam will continue to provide water and temporary sanitation facilities to the affected population.
