RAD was founded 1994 by Aaron Tan as OMA Asia in Hong Kong. It was an independent design office from OMA Rotterdom.
Since 2001 the office is renamed RAD-Research Architecture Design and it sets out to bridge the gap between Eastern and western understanding of architecture and urbanism.
RAD has completed many high profile developments in prime locations in Asia.Projects include office towers in Hong Kong,new economy planning in Singapore,urbon design in China,highway center in Taiwan,telecommunication headquarter and designer hotel in Korea.The office has won open competitions including the Guangzhou International Converntion&Exhibition Center and Redevelopment of Orchard Road.
RAD has a staff of 25.architects,urhan planners and interior designers and media researchers of international origin, led by Aaron Tan. Architects, designers and technicions work in close collobaration. Consultants and external critics participate from the beginning of the design process.
RAD is widely published and participated in milestone exhibitions such as Archilab in France(2002), Hoyword in London(2000),Cities on the Move in several major cities of Europe(1997),Kwangju Biennale in Seoul(1997),City/Space/Globalisation in New York(1998).
Aaron Tan has given public lectures in many instrtutions,including the NAY Rotterdom,PAM in Kuala Lumpur,APP in Sydey,TNProbe in Tokyo,AAAsia in Beijing and Harvard.
This academic and intellectual involvement forms of important cornerstone in the work of RAD. Together with the reality of building proxis,it shapes and defines the positioning of the office as an avantgarde office in Asia,which is specialised in creating a lifestyle environment through lifestyle projects.
