Kathak" is one of the most appreciated of Indian Classical Dances,namely, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Kathakali,all being categorized according to their area of origin.Kathak is a dance form belonging to the entire Indus-Gangetic region of the Indian Sub-continent.
"Kathak" derived its name from the Sanskrit words "Katha" meaning "story" and "Kathakaar" meaning "storyteller".Hence the term "Kathak" is used both for the dance form and the dancers who perform the art.
"Kathak",the dance form,originated in the temples where the pandits used to narrate stories(mostly mythological) and eventually started enacting them with the help of movements and gestures.
