Aoni’s history began in the 80s when Mr. Jacky Chan, Founder & Chairman, saw a significant market potential for condoms in Hong Kong. At the time, Mr. Chan was in the condom export business and began to envision a product that would fill the market gap and benefit the community. While the population’s attitude towards sex slowly transformed from tradition and taboo to science and education, condoms became a better known necessity for the ordinary family.
Subsequently, Jacky created the brand “Aoni”, which is derived from the similar pronunciation of “Omni” (Latin for “all, almighty”), to become one of the few foreign invested condom brands to lead the way in the Asian market. Aoni condoms quickly became popular and was recognized as a product that not only delivers contraception and protection against sexually transmitted disease, but also brings new technology into the industry through its commitment on research and development.
During the 90s, sex products became more accessible and familiar to the general public as the economy grey. However, the commercialization and growth in the industry also brought with it some adverse effects as suppliers began to pursue wealth over safety. Amidst this chaos, Aoni continued to value corporate social responsibility and ethical business practices. Aoni advocated for and assisted in the inclusion of condoms as a class of medical equipment, thus regulated by high quality and safety standards, and actively cooperated in the crackdown of unsafe products by the government.
