Hanart TZ Gallery has been a pioneer in exploring the Chinese cultural map and, over 20 years, has worked with numerous artists now internationally prominent.
The Gallery opened in November in 1983 as a venue to view art unfamiliar to the Hong Kong public. Artists of the greater Chinese art world from Mainland China, Taiwan as well as the diaspora congregated, in time the Gallery became a locus of emerging Chinese artists. As such the Gallery has served as a significant link with the international art world; its role in landmark exhibitions, such as The Stars 10 Years (1989) and China’s New Art Post-1989 (1993, toured until 1998), are iconic.
Hanart TZ Gallery has organised numerous significant exhibitions internationally, including Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming at Place Vendome in Paris and Avenue Linden at Berlin; A Strange Heaven, photography from China, Taiwan and Kong Kong in Europe in 2003. Liu Kuo-sung at Palace Museum, Beijing in 2007; Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, Feng Mengbo at Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague in 2008. In 2010, the Gallery has opened a new exhibition space, Hanart Square, for featuring shows of experimental art and installations.
It is our belief that publication and intellectual discourse are critical to encouraging creativity and spreading information, and over the years the Gallery has worked with many writers and curators, and has produced over a hundred catalogues. In recent years the Gallery is gradually extended its focus to contemporary art abroad, and its programming reflects attempts to build links between artists of the Asian region.
