Fine Contemporary Asian Art

While Tibet’s unique terrain, people and culture attract much attention around the world, her contemporary fine art remains little known to the outside world. This unique form of fine art deserves better exposure and appreciation which is critical to the preservation, continuation and development of Tibet’s indigenous culture. Working closely with the flourishing Tibetan art community, we are dedicated to playing a small part in this great mission.

Opening in 1993, Galerie La Vong of Hong Kong is the first gallery dedicated exclusively to the promotion of contemporary Vietnamese fine art. We are doing it again after 18 years; in pursuing its theme of ‘Beyond Vietnam – Embracing China’, we celebrate our 18th anniversary on June 16th with an art exhibition of contemporary Tibetan fine art, featuring 10 leading and up-and-coming young Tibetan artists.

We, Shirley Hui and Julia Wen, the two partners of La Vong, started as private collectors of contemporary Vietnamese fine art in 1991 when the country first opened up to foreign visitors. Befriending artists and art critics in Hanoi, Hue and HCMC, we decided this art form which was little known outside of Vietnam deserves better exposure and appreciation—as a result, Galerie La Vong was founded.

Since 2006, we branched out into other areas of fine art, culminating into our newest venture of promotion of contemporary Tibetan fine art; in particular of the ‘post-modern’ genre.

Tibetan Post-Modernism is the seamless integration of modernism with her deeply-rooted religious psyche of reconciliation and acceptance of “old” and “new”, inheriting the past while breaking through to the future in which the artist shares with the outside world his own inner spirit of compassion and love.

Unique to Tibetan Post-Modernism is the blending of surrealism of modern painting with its ancient religious art of Thangka, and the meticulous use of mineral and organic pigments. Its appeal lies in its power to uplift the spirit of the viewer closer to the realm of spirituality: form is emptiness, and emptiness is form.
