The majority of the teachers at the Alliance Française are French nationals, but there are also Chinese and other nationalities on our faculty. All have perfect mastery of the French language and were trained to teach French as a foreign language in the best of French universities. They are thus all highly qualified educators.
Learning a foreign language allows one to communicate with foreigners in their native tongue. The first phase of this process is achieved through two-way oral comprehension and communication. For this reason, today at the Alliance Française, the first levels of our training program focus mainly on oral communication. Students will then improve their writing skills through concept and project activities. Thus, the four areas of study are covered in the curriculum beginning at the very first levels of instruction.
To become proficient, students must work on grammar, vocabulary, phonetics and intonation. Our communication-oriented approach provides students with opportunities for self-expression as early as the first lessons. For this reason, classroom work in small groups occurs frequently.
At the end of each quarter, students sit an exam designed to evaluate their current level of knowledge. If they do not obtain a passing mark, they are advised to redo the same level or improve their skills through supplementary courses and workshops (phonetics, oral comprehension, oral expression or grammar).
Upon completion of levels 5, 10, 14 and 18, students take an exam that qualifies them for an Alliance Française diploma.
Depending on the level and age of the students, different lesson books are used. All are based on dynamic and communicative teaching methodologies.
