Caritas Hospitality Services comprising Catering, Hostel and Lodge Services, originated when the Roman Catholic Church shouldered the responsibility to serve the deprived in the 1950s. Caritas Catering Service initially grew from provision of relief food, to then supplying canteens, tuck shops and restaurants for in-house service users, grassroots workers and students. Caritas Hostel Service was launched in the early 1960s in response to Sai Kung fishermen's need for shelter. Services expanded to provide inexpensive shelter to young workers and students who could not for one reason or another live with their families. Caritas Lodge Service provides reasonably priced accommodation for travelers. The two lodges, together with their restaurants also act as a training ground for students undertaking Caritas vocational education.
