EXTRACT OF UNIT 1 LECTURE - 100% PURE ESSENTIAL OILS ~ What exactly ARE THEY?
Every Essential oil is a complex mixture of chemical constituents (sometimes as many as 300) synthesized by plants. They are manually extracted from the plant, often very powerful and always highly concentrated. They come under the medical classification of Phytomedicines (plant medicines, like herbs).
They only become Essential oils when they have been extracted by means of distillation or some other method; before that they are part of the plant’s natural essence, or life-force and because they are concentrated, they are 50 - 70 times more therapeutically potent than the herbs or plants they are extracted from.
The plant's ‘essence’, (some might even say it’s Soul) contains most of therapeutic properties of the plant, and is stored in special cells called Secretory cells, in many different parts of the plant, (depending upon the type). For example, Neroli is extracted from the petals of a plant, Juniper from the berries, Cinnamon from the leaf, Fennel from the seeds, Vetivert from the root, and Lemon from the rind.
To scientists, the whole of the human body can be explained in terms of its chemistry, but that does not explain ‘life’ itself or anything perhaps more spiritual. In plants too, there is something found in their interactions with each other that seems to stand outside of modern science’s comprehension. An essential oil is much more than the sum of its parts, as the molecules within it interact with each other to strengthen their own actions. Also, some essential oils when blended with certain others, have a similar response. This is called ‘synergy’ in Aromatherapy. A kind of 2 + 2 = 6 process, which we'll look at later on.
Aromatherapy however, is much more than the wonderful actions of these Essential oils. The care and compassion you must give to yourself or whoever else you may help, along with the physical and emotional benefits of touch and massage, together produce something called ‘healing’. These are all very important parts of Holistic Aromatherapy.
