De Ling & Empress Dowager Ci Xi (Theatrical Gem ‧Revival)
It’s the end of the 19th century. At a time when China’s doors remain firmly shut to the West, a vivacious western educated De Ling, a Qing Dynasty princess, arrives at the doorsteps of the Forbidden City. Behind the heavy gates live the presumptuous Empress Dowager Ci Xi and her despairing son, the emperor Kangxi. The rivalry between the imperial court consorts and in-fighting among the corrupted officials offer a startling contrast to De Ling’s perception and understanding of the civilised West.
De Ling and Empress Dowager Ci Xi belong to a different world yet fate is to bring them together at a historic time … this is their story.
This production premiered in 1998 and took the theatre world by storm. At the 8th Hong Kong Drama Awards it won Best Drama of the Year, Best Director, Best Original Script, Best Costume Design and was voted one of the Top Ten Most Popular Productions. Its 2005 re-run garnered more critical acclaim and was completely sold out.
