The greener the better! Architects and designers receive green thumbs-up at the Green Building Awards 2006 and the Hong Kong Eco-Products Award 2006In a city that sometimes seems ready to drown in awards programmes related to design - and the vague tones of self-satisfaction that accompany them - it is slightly difficult to greet yet another one with fascination or glee. But if there was ever a worthy subject to cast the spotlight on, and one worthy of the encouragement that awards can bring, it is the issue of sustainability in architecture and engineering. For much too long the building professions, along with their patrons both private and public, have ignored the damaging impact of buildings, roads, services, even landscape designs, on our environment. With the belated general awareness of the current status (dire) of our planet¡¦s ecosystem and the direct effects of climate change now being experienced, professionals have been forced to pay attention to the potentially detrimental impact of their work and to take a much more responsible role in minimising it. This is occurring through new technologies, but also through the application of the oldest 'technology' of all, common sense......
