Pei Ming Arts Carving Ltd.
"Pei Ming" in Chinese means hundreds of birds sing together. From the name, you may not know that the factory is famous of making birds. However, from her history, you will understand why Pei Ming is always recommended by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to the overseas buyers.
Pei Ming is founded by Mr Chung Wui in 1971. He grew up in China and was a bird-watching enthusiast. He spent most his leisure time in feeding birds and watching birds.
In 1962, like the other young people, he came to Hong Kong and try to find a better way of life.
He worked in a large department store as a Saleman. After a few years, he started to plan to make ing the home decoration products for retailing.
A colourful and life-like wooden birds can be a good decorative item for the home. With his great interests in the birds, he belived that he entered the market and produced a high quality wooden birds for retailing. He started souring the materials, spending his time in the birds store and getting information for setting up the factory.
After three years preparing work, the factory was born in Ping Chau in 1971. It is an outlying island in Hong Kong. Job opportunity in the island was rare. It will be more easily to keep the skilled labour after they were being trained. The factory started with 5 staff. Promotion was difficult for Chung as he did not speak English. He relied on the Hong Kong Trade Council and having the advertising in the Magazine. The first business was starting with a British Company.
The business was growing up in few years time, the transportation became a problem for him. He had no choice and had to move the factory the industrial area.
Like other industries, the factory was moved to China in 1980 in order to cope with the inflated labour cost. Chung chose his motherland, Hai Feng, to set up the factory that he felt the people were more easy to control in here and at the same time, to provide job opportunities to the city where he grew.
At present, the factory is well-equipped with 300 skilled labour and produce around 30,000 to 40,000 a month. Despite the birds, the factory also produce fishes, ducks, animals and premium items.
