Discovery Bay (DB) has now been transformed into a luxurious resort style residential commune. It is a self-contained community that boasts a huge range of amenities, including a man-made beach, four recreational clubs including a 27-hole golf course and a marina yacht club, natural streams and rock pools, bicycle tracks, astro-turf football pitch, basketball court, numerous children's playgrounds and good hiking paths leading to other parts of Lantau Island - including the Trappist Haven Monastery and Mui Wo.
Its 14,000+ residents comprise of 30 different nationalities, and results in an array of cultural diversity and festivities throughout the year. DB’s low density make it a prime location for young families to raise their children as there are three kindergartens and two primary schools, as well as a number of residential playgroups.
With golf carts and buses as the only means of transportation within the community, pollution levels are significantly lower than Hong Kong side. Combined with the lush landscape, mountain scenery and breathtaking sea view, DB resembles the private resort complex it was intended to be. The fireworks from Disneyland can be seen every night, further encapsulating the uniqueness of an island resort.
Transportation to Hong Kong side is serviced by a 24-hour ferry service to Central or by buses to Tung Chung’s MTR station. Both are just a short trip to the city centre, making it accessible and convenient for leisure activities. Furthermore, there is a direct shuttle bus that runs continuously throughout the day to Hong Kong’s international airport.
Ongoing developments are proposed for the island to renovate and further developed its amenities. These include the development of a new ‘Coastal and Leisure Entertainment Landmark’, the construction of a shopping mall, hotel and additional leisure and educational facilities to better serve the community.
