SCHOOL OF DRAMA
The School of Drama trains talented young people to become professional actors, directors or playwrights of drama. Students are encouraged not only to acquire technical skills, but to develop their creativity.Professional skills acquired, learnt primarily through formal training in class, are developed in performance. Student performances take place both in workshop and in public, using theatre spaces specially designed to be adaptable to both traditional and innovative work.The School also aims to provide the students at the Degree level with a far-ranging background, and cultivate an appreciation of the performing arts as a whole, both oriental and occidental.The School is committed to the development of drama in Hong Kong and to meeting the needs of the local audience. Therefore all its productions are in the local dialect of Cantonese.
The School of Drama has a range of programmes designed for people of different educational needs. These include the Diploma, Advanced Diploma, BFA (Honours) Degree, and Professional Diploma programmes.The Diploma programme is a two year foundation programme in Acting, which introduces the student to a wide range of drama activities. This is tailored to the needs of school leavers, or for those students who may have had little previous experience of Drama.
Students who successfully graduate from the Diploma may be considered for entry to either the Advanced Diploma (two years further study) or BFA (Honours) Degree programme (three years further study). The Advanced Diploma is designed for those students who wish to have a full professional training for entry into either the Acting or Playwriting profession, and offers an intense practical training. The Degree programme, in which students specialise in Acting or Directing, offers the same professional elements and is also geared towards producing theatre practitioners as, combined with more in-depth theoretical and academic study. Candidates can also enter these programmes directly, if they possess the appropriate academic qualifications and have had some previous experience in Drama.The Professional Diploma programme is a one-year programme of advanced study for those Advanced Diploma graduates who wish to have further and more in-depth study in Acting or Playwriting.
